En un informe presentado ayer en Bruselas por WWF, se confirma que con más de tres millones de empleos en toda Europa, las actividades económicas verdes están superando a las industrias contaminantes en términos de generación de empleo.
El informe “Low carbon jobs for Europe” muestra que al menos 3,4 millones de empleos europeos están relacionados directamente con la energía renovable, transporte sostenible y bienes y servicios de eficiencia energética. Sin embargo, las industrias contaminantes como la minería, electricidad, gas, cemento, hierro y acero, dan trabajo a 2,8 millones de personas. Se prevé que la economía baja en carbono continúe expandiéndose en el futuro, mientras que el trabajo extractivo y contaminante seguirá disminuyendo.
Jason Anderson, Responsable de Política Europea de Energía y Clima de WWF, declaró: “El estudio señala claramente a los ganadores y aporta evidencias de que las políticas respetuosas con el clima y las tecnologías contribuyen positivamente a la economía” Y concluyó: “La economía limpia está a punto de despegar. Si los políticos continúan apoyando industrias contaminantes, Europa tendrá que hacer frente a costes muy elevados en el futuro, tanto ambiental como económicamente”
De los datos disponibles en el informe cabe destacar las 400.000 personas empleadas en actividades relacionadas con energía renovable, los 2,1 millones que trabajan en transporte eficiente y las 900.000 personas que trabajan con bienes y servicios derivados de la eficiencia energética. Entre estos empleos se incluyen, por ejemplo, la fabricación, instalación y mantenimiento de turbinas eólicas y paneles solares y obras de construcción para mejorar la eficiencia en los edificios. El empleo indirecto relacionado se estima en unos 5 millones más.
Todos estos sectores están mostrando un crecimiento significativo, especialmente la energía eólica, solar fotovoltaica, bioenergía, transporte público y edificios eficientes.
España es, junto con Alemania, líder europeo en energía eólica. En 2008 el sector eólico empleó en nuestro país directamente más de 20.000 personas, a las que hay que sumar 40.000 de empleo indirecto.
Con vistas a la próxima reunión del Consejo Europea en Bruselas, el 18 y 19 de junio, WWF pide a la UE que se comprometa firmemente a cortar las emisiones domésticas de gases de efecto invernadero y que se mueva hacia una economía verde.
Heikki Willstedt, experto en energía de WWF España afirmó: “las energías renovables son una opción real y crean mas empleos que las energías obsoletas y contaminantes. El gobierno, con su decisión sobre el cierre de la central nuclear de Garoña, tiene la oportunidad de dar señales claras sobre el modelo energético por el que apuesta para nuestro país” www.ecoportal.net
